Hire America’s Heroes® connects America’s major corporations with the rich skills and abilities of military service members and their families for the purpose of employment in the corporate workforce. We promote best practices and success strategies in military-to-corporate transitions, recruiting, hiring, on-boarding, and retention.

As Hire America’s Heroes (HAH) closes out 2013 and prepares to go forward into 2014, we take pause to look back on a year of major accomplishments. In 2013 Hire America’s Heroes once again doubled in size. We brought on new staff and improved our back-office operations to accommodate this growth. We continued to deliver the events our Puget Sound Area companies have come to expect of us—two successful Career Day events, a Symposium that recognized and honored the work of our State’s National Guard and Reserve components, and an end-of-year Gala at The Golf Club at Newcastle that set a new high-water mark! We also launched Symposium and Career Day events in California, where operations are beginning to grow and flourish.

At the beginning of 2013, we launched the Pipeline Program—an early-intervention strategy that leverages the Veterans Opportunity to Work (VOW) to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 (H.R. 674) that was co-sponsored by Washington Senator Patty Murray and Florida Representative Jeff Miller. Through the Pipeline Program, Hire America’s Heroes now works with both the Army and Air Force on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) to assist transitioning service members up to 18 months prior to their departure to be better prepared for jobs in the corporate workplace. The Pipeline Program is closing the year with 150 participants, 33% of whom have already found post-service employment.

In 2014 Hire America’s Heroes will see the addition of a management team to further support our new growth. We anticipate Symposia, Career Day events, and Pipeline Industry Forums in Washington and California as well as growth of the Pipeline Program itself in both states. It will be an exciting year for Hire America’s Heroes as the California Chapter brings in its tenth Sponsor and employs a Chapter Director to lead efforts there.

For now, we anticipate a well-deserved rest as we celebrate the season with friends and family. Together we look forward to new beginnings in 2014.

Hire America's Heroes Hosts Healthcare Industry Forum

Healthcare Industry ForumHire America’s Heroes is hosting four industry forums in 2014, each of which will showcase military-trained skills unique to a featured industry: Healthcare, Information Technology, Manufacturing, and Retail. These forums are part of the Hire America’s Heroes Pipeline Program, which delivers highly skilled transitioning Military Service Members to high-demand civilian employment opportunities with companies that need these Veterans’ training, education, and skills.

Highlights of the Healthcare Industry Forum in January include a Military Training and Crosswalk presentation by Tommy Simpson, Military Programs Manager, Washington Department of Health; a Tour of Medical Simulation Training Center (MSTC) led by Thomas Pingel, QAR/Course Director, Medical Simulation Training Center; a Reverse Career Fair; a Panel Presentation on Market Demands, Challenges and Opportunities; and “Where Do We Go from Here?”—a presentation by Lourdes “Alfie” Alvarado, Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs.

Two Hire America’s Heroes Sponsors Recognized for Hiring Veterans

AmazonIn an article posted on Veteran’s Day, Wall St. Cheat Sheet listed Amazon and University of Phoenix among “7 Top Companies That Hire Veterans.” Placing Amazon at the top of their list, Wall St. Cheat Sheet noted, “Amazon has long prioritized hiring veterans because the company experiences many of the same stressful situations that those with military experience are prepared to deal with. It doesn’t take a bachelor’s degree or an MBA to manage a warehouse in the peak season when everything around you is descending into chaos, but it does take a calm, collected approach, the very mindset that veterans are often able to bring to the table.”

University of PhoenixThe University of Phoenix is a subsidiary of the Apollo Group, which Wall St. Cheat Sheet included at number seven with praise for taking steps “to ensure that those in the military are able to find careers within the online educator.”

Hire America’s Heroes 2013 Gala
November 1, 2013 at The Golf Club at Newcastle

Hire America’s Heroes hosted its annual Gala on November 1, 2013. This elegant affair, which celebrated and recognized HAH’s 2103 accomplishments, was well attended by Sponsors, Military Advisory Board Members, and transitioning service members. Andy Wappler, Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Puget Sound Energy (PSE), served as the master of ceremonies, and Alex Quade, a freelance reporter who covers U.S. Special Operations Forces on combat missions, was the keynote speaker.

During the awards ceremony, the following certificates were presented:

  • Certificate of Recognition: HAH Military Advisory Board for their support of the Hire America’s Heroes mission across the military services in Washington and California
  • Certificate of Recognition: Washington National Guard for hosting and supporting the Hire America’s Heroes Washington Symposium at Joint Base Lewis-McChord to educate employers on the value of hiring members of the National Guard and Reserve
  • Certificate of Recognition: U.S. Coast Guard for hosting and supporting the Hire America’s Heroes inaugural California Symposium at Coast Guard Island Alameda to educate employers on the value of hiring members of the Coast Guard and other Sea Services
  • Certificate of Appreciation: Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs for their ongoing partnership as we work together to assist transitioning military job seekers and veterans entering the corporate workforce
  • Certificate of Appreciation: Army and Air Force Career and Alumni Program (AACAP) for their partnership in launching the Hire America’s Heroes Pipeline Project and for their ongoing support of our efforts on Joint Base Lewis-McChord
  • Certificate of Appreciation: Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) for their partnership in providing volunteer support for Hire America’s Heroes’ events and for our shared commitment to members of the Washington National Guard and Reserve

The undisputed highlight of this year’s Gala was the coining ceremony. As a microphone was passed around the room, representatives of several HAH Sponsor organizations took turns recognizing the hired heroes they invited to this event. Each presented a Hire America’s Heroes challenge coin to a Military Service Member or Veteran who is—or soon will be—serving their company.

Members of the U.S. Armed Forces have a long-standing tradition of collecting and carrying such coins to symbolize unit identity and instill pride in those who carry them. Hire America’s Heroes is proud to be a part of the military tradition of bestowing challenge coins in recognition of special achievement by members of the American Military Family.

Hire America’s Heroes will be hosting our 2014 Career Day at CenturyLink Field on Friday, February 28. We anticipate 70 Employers and over 600 Job Seekers from the American Military Family. Exhibitor booths are $1,200 each for organizations that are not current members of HAH.
