Hire America’s Heroes® connects America’s major corporations with the rich skills and abilities of military service members and their families for the purpose of employment in the corporate workforce. We promote best practices and success strategies in military-to-corporate transitions, recruiting, hiring, on-boarding, and retention.

As we wrap up 2013 and prepare to execute our plans for 2014, our Board of Directors and I are pleased to introduce two people who have agreed to take on significant roles in the implementation of those plans: Jerry Doherty and Dan Verbeke. Jerry has been tasked with assisting the leadership team of the California Chapter, and Dan is working to mature the Pipeline Project so it will become a sustainable Program of Hire America’s Heroes (HAH). Here’s a little more information about each of them and their work for HAH.

California Chapter

Building upon the foundational efforts of the California Steering Committee and the success of the Alameda Symposium event in July, Hire America's Heroes is moving swiftly to expand by establishing a California chapter not later than January 2014. Jerry Doherty, a Coast Guard veteran living in the San Francisco Bay Area, has begun the efforts to develop the tasks and goals for HAH’s first twelve months in California, and to align those tasks and goals with the needs and desires of our California stakeholders.

Additionally, since adding a chapter will necessitate organizational changes within Hire America's Heroes, Jerry is working to assess how those changes can be accomplished in ways that will allow Hire America's Heroes to remain a relatively flat and lean organization, and leverage the talent and experience it has in Washington to support programs in California.

The specific outcomes of Jerry's efforts will include a position description for a chapter director, the specific tasks and goals for the first twelve months in California, a schedule of key events for Hire America's Heroes in the California region during 2014, an organization structure for Hire America's Heroes that describes how to move from the current state to the new desired state, and inputs for the 2014 budget that support these changes. Since Hire America's Heroes is looking forward to expanding beyond California, Jerry is also developing a generic version of these deliverables that may be used as a template for opening future chapters in other parts of the country.

Pipeline Program for Military Job Seekers

Hire America’s Heroes is pleased to announce the development of the Pipeline Program due to launch in the coming year. The Pipeline Project Pilot was conducted to assist our Sponsors with identifying talent from January to June 2013. With the success of that pilot, HAH is moving forward to develop Pipeline into an enduring program that will provide assistance to transitioning military Job Seekers, spouses, and drilling Guard and Reserve service members. Dan Verbeke, a retired Army veteran who lives in the Seattle area, is serving as the Program Developer of the Pipeline Program. He is responsible for crafting the processes and shaping the environment to transform the Pipeline Project into a full-fledged program.

The intent of the program is to identify candidates, provide additional assistance to applicants through the use of volunteer Career Coaches, and offer inroads to the corporate workplace. Career Coaches provide a vital link between the applicant and the corporate recruiter through resume review, networking, and expectation management—setting realistic expectations of an interview with a hiring manager. The success of the program depends largely upon building on skills learned through the transition assistance services the participants receive from their respective military service programs.

79th SSC Hosts Employment and Resource Fair

Hire America's Heroes will be joining the 79th Sustainment Support Command for this Employment and Resource Fair, which is part of the 79th SSC's continuing effort to provide a wide range of Employment Opportunities, programs, services, information, and referrals to Soldiers, Transitioning Military members, Military retirees, and their Family Members.

2014 Healthcare Industry Forum

We're excited to announce that our Healthcare Industry Forum will be held on Friday, January 24, 2014 at Madigan Army Medical Center, near Tacoma, Washington. It is our second Industry Forum and one of four to be held in 2014. The first Hire America's Heroes Industry Forum was conducted earlier this year. You can read about it in the After Action Report below. These forums are part of the Hire America's Heroes Pipeline Project/Program. Hire America’s Heroes Posts Press Releases to Announce New Sponsors

Hire America’s Heroes 2013 Energy Industry Forum
Stone Education Center on June 27, 2013

With Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) taking the corporate lead, HAH hosted the first in a series of five planned Pipeline Project industry forums. The 2013 Energy Industry Forum was held at Stone Education Center on June 27, bringing together 20 representatives from 14 corporate energy sector employers to learn which military occupations provide service members with the best training and experience for post-military jobs in their industry. Eight representatives from Military Support organizations, including Joint Service Support (JSS) and the Army Career and Alumni Program (ACAP) Fleet and Family services, were on hand to discuss the specific MOSs that lend themselves to Energy Sector employment opportunities.

PG&E presented a case study of its best corporate veteran hiring practices, focusing on six of its critical energy jobs, the essential functions of each, and their MOSs equivalents. This event also featured a panel presentation on military training entitled “How Service Members are Prepared for Energy Sector Jobs.” The panel, comprised of senior-ranking Army officers, addressed the scope of training provided to service members and detailed the ways in which that training prepares their Soldiers for energy sector jobs.

Hire America’s Heroes 2013 California Symposium
California Coast Guard Island Alameda on July 19

Hire America’s Heroes continuously collaborates with partners and agencies in Washington and California to bring together private sector employers and the military community. Through our Annual Symposia, Sponsors and Supporters have an opportunity to visit local military bases and experience life inside these “gated communities,” gaining a greater understanding of military personnel and the value they bring as employees in the corporate workforce.

Our first California Symposium was held July 19 on California Coast Guard Island Alameda. Highlights of the 2013 California Symposium include a welcome from PG&E CEO and President Anthony F. Earley Jr., a Military Spouse Employment Presentation, a Military Employment Panel on Best Practices, and a Reverse Career Fair.

Attendees were invited to participate in a Coast Guard Showcase featuring tours of a National Security Cutter (NSC) USCGC WAESCHE (WMSL-751); a Pacific Strike Team Demonstration; the Communications Area Master Station Pacific; a Mobile Communications Vehicle; a Hazardous Materials Response Trailer; and a Canine (K9) Team Demonstration. Post-event survey respondents gave the Showcase and Tours their highest rating of the day, a 4.75 out of 5.

Thirteen elected leaders from California, including Dianne Feinstein, Barbara Boxer, and Nancy Pelosi, provided testimonials supporting the event. You can see those in this document: 2013 California Symposium Event Program.

Hire America’s Heroes 2013 Career Day at Safeco Field
August 9, 2013

Hire America’s Heroes’ Career Day events are designed to provide a venue to connect Military Job Seekers with Corporate Employers, allowing job-seeking members of the American Military Family to discuss specific employment opportunities, learn about corporate employment procedures, and improve job-search skills.

Our 2013 Career Day at Safeco Field in August featured several transition assistance activities: one-on-one Career Coaching with veterans employed in corporations, Accenture’s “Skills to Succeed” Videotaped Practice Interviews and LinkedIn Workshops, and a networking workshop powered by ProLango. Recruiting and hiring activities included access to “Navigating Careers at Boeing” presentations.

Hire America’s Heroes 2013 Gala, Featuring CNN War Reporter, Alex Quade
Friday, November 1

To commemorate another amazing year of growth and accomplishments, please join Hire America’s Heroes on Friday, November 1 at The Golf Club at Newcastle for our second annual Gala. Attendees will enjoy an elegant banquet reception, awards ceremony, and special presentation from Alex Quade, Freelance War Reporter with CNN and other outlets. Additionally, veterans now employed in Sponsor corporations will be sharing how they have benefited from Hire America’s Heroes’ programs.

The evening’s Keynote, Ms. Quade, who covers U.S. Special Operations Forces on combat missions, is the recipient of two national RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards as well as the Congressional Medal of Honor Society’s “Tex McCrary Award for Excellence in Journalism.” Recognized “for her courageous reporting and honest news coverage,” Ms. Quade has worked in television for Fox News and CNN.
